Environment

The environmental issues in Greece are slowly coming into focus after centuries of neglect and abuse of the lands natural resources. The wide scale deforestation of native trees and the planting of olive trees also the plethora of goats grazing on the already fragile land has not helped.

Forest fires have decimated much of the forests of Greece , they have been caused by natural means due to the hot weather, or by the misuse by residents or tourists discarding rubbish and the remains of cigarettes into the under growth. Litter is a major problem; discarded along the roadside it causes problems for the wildlife and is unsightly for the visitor and the residents. The educating of future generations in the schools is underway, but public and governmental awareness is not as good as it should be.
