Towns and Villages
Ambelakia: in the 18th century, the locals founded the Koini Syntrofia (Common Company), the first industrial cooperative in Greece, for producing, processing and exporting thread and yarn. The cooperative had agencies in most of the countries of Europe and 6000 members. The Schwarz mansion with its murals, woodcarvings and stained glass windows and the churches of Agios Georgios, Agia Paraskevi and Agios Athanassios are among the many interesting things to see in the village.
Stop for a pause in one of the cafes or tavernas and try some of the local delicacies and the superb red wine, to which the town owes its name (Ambelakia from ambelia meaning grape vines). Today the cooperative tradition continues as Ambelakia's women take part in the growth of the area through a state-assisted project that combines traditional rural living and the development of the tourist trade. The festival of Prophet Elias held on July 20 in the village is a very popular event.
Kastania: is a resort village at an altitude of 800 metres. Kastania is an ideal spot for summer and winter tourism with a healthy dry climate. Kastania is 25 km. from Karditsa.
Rivers and streams offer the chance for a spot of trout fishing.
Morfovouni: this picturesque village also known as Vounesi lies 18 km south-west of Karditsa. The village lies within oak and chestnut forests with great views over the Plains of Thessalia.
There are a host of villages and hamlets in the region, each offering their own unique charm for the visitor.
