The island of Thasos
is the northernmost Aegean island. With lush vegetation, rich forests
it is also known as the “emerald isle”.
Thasos has some of the best beaches in the region as a result tourists
arrive here by the boatload. The islands economy rests not only on
income from the tourist trade, but also on the export of timber and
metal ores. Oil fields discovered offshore have opened the area for
further development. Thasos is no stranger to riches. Gold deposits
found by the Parians in 700 BC. on Mt.Pangaion led to great wealth
and power. Successive invaders of Greece were eager to have their
share of the wealth, so they levied heavy taxes upon the island and
eventually the island declined into poverty.
Thasos Town
The
town is the capital and main port of the island, and is full of
activity with tourists during the summer months. The town is a modern,
with some Archaeological remains the ancient theatre still hosts
plays and other events. The site of the ancient Agora, the old market
place has some remains of previous life in the town. On top of the
Acropolis are ruins of an earlier fortress, built upon the foundations
of an older fortress whose walls once enclosed the town. In August,
the Full Moon Festival takes place and people come from all over
Greece to take part in the singing.
Along the east coast are good
quality beaches, Hrysi Ammoudia ( Golden Beach ) is good but can
be crowed during the high season. Nearby is Potamia, the birthplace
of Polygnotos Vagis, who moved to America and gained international
acclaim. The local museum has displays of his work. Off the coast
near the village of Kinara , is the islet of Kinara this is a charming
place with two good beaches, a small archaeological site. The Moni
Arhangelou is worth a visit, where it is possible to buy icons
and crosses from the nuns who reside here.
The west coast also has
many fine villages and beaches to visit. Skala Rahoni is popular
with tour operators, and is a good place for water sports. Mikros
and Megalos in the hills are stunning. Limenaria, the second largest
town on Thasos , is a decent resort though can get busy in the
summer. One of the most delightful villages on Thasos is Theologos
situated in the mountains and is typical of Greek villages, whitewashed
houses and an enchanting atmosphere.
